Felice Frankel – United States
Felice Frankel is a science photographer and research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the department of Chemical Engineering with additional support from Mechanical Engineering. She joined MIT in 1994. Working in collaboration with scientists and engineers, her images have appeared in outlets such as Nature, Science, JACS, PNAS, Langmuir, Joule, National Geographic, Newsweek, Scientific American, Discover, Popular Science, and New Scientist, among others. Felice has recently published the book The Visual Elements – Photography (a Handbook for Communicating Science and Engineering).

Presentation: More than Pretty Pictures
Susanne Diekmann, MD, MSc – Germany
After studying human medicine and obtaining her doctorate, Dr. Diekmann began her clinical work at the Institute of Radiology at the Charité in Berlin in 1998. Her scientific focus was on the introduction and further development of digital mammography. In 2004 she became a specialist in diagnostic radiology and in 2012 she was recognized as a specialist in neuroradiology. She worked as deputy head of a mammography screening department, studied Neuroimaging for Research (University of Edinburgh, UK) obtained the European Certificate in Neuroradiology and worked as a neuroradiologist at Telemedicineclinic (Barcelona, Spain).
Since 2013, Dr. Diekmann works as a medical consultant at Fraunhofer MEVIS (Bremen, Germany) and is involved as a medical consultant in the development of software-support for radiological imaging using artificial intelligence and the post-processing of radiological data. During this time her interest in the artistic representation of human anatomy grew. She is pursuing this goal with her studies in medical illustration (MAET, London, Great Britain) 2019 - 2024. Her artistic approach is to link different worlds of medical visualization from traditional drawing techniques to the three-dimensional processing of radiological data. She uses the wide range of imaging techniques to visually convey medical facts to patients and medical laypeople. Dr. Diekmann lives with her husband and their two children in Bremen (Germany).

Presentation: The Beauty of Nature – Discovered with X-rays
Eugene Liscios a 3D Forensic Analyst and long-time advocate of 3D technologies in the forensics area. He has used 3D data at trial and for many areas in crash and crime scene investigations. He currently is the owner of ai2-3D and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto, Mississauga. Eugene has published many scientific and peer-reviewed papers in 3D Forensics.

Presentation: Getting Started with Photogrammetry
Jesse Andrewartha is an award-winning photographer, filmmaker and visual effects artist based in Vancouver, Canada. He specializes in obscure darkroom techniques using analogue ultra-large format cameras, hybrid processes and 16mm and 35mm motion picture film. Jesse’s work uses the photographic image to examine the collision between humankind and the physical world. To capture these unique stories, Andrewartha has travelled to remote destinations in northern North America and advanced the limits of historical processes by utilizing novel techniques and fabricating custom photographic equipment.
He is active in the Vancouver analogue film community, having shown work at festivals such as the Capture Photography Festival and Vancouver Art Gallery. He is a recipient of a 2018 Explore & Create grant from the Canada Council of the Arts for “Transmutations,” his most recent series of works on Uranium in North America, and a Board Member of the Atomic Photographers Guild, an international photographic collective dedicated to making visible all facets of the nuclear age.

Presentation: The Atomic Photographers Guild: Imaging the Nuclear Condition
Silvi Glattauer is a photo-media artist based in Melbourne, Australia, whose practice melds digital and handmade imaging techniques. She is known for her contemporary Photopolymer Photogravure process. Her creations serve as conduits for these sentiments, infused with her personal narratives and connections. Across her body of work, recurring themes of materiality, object symbolism, and the notion of preciousness intertwine, through meticulously crafted prints. This deliberate approach seeks to forge an emotional and tangible link between the audience and the natural world.
Silvi Glattauer has held exhibitions within Australia and abroad, with highlight features at the Museum of Victoria and consistent recognition as a finalist in the esteemed Boweness Photography awards. Among her notable accomplishments, she boasts the coveted Nillumbik Prize and a series of commissions from the Victorian government, producing documentaries highlighting bushfire recovery and memorials in 2014, 2016, and 2019. Silvi takes pride in the placement of her works in both private and public collections, with holdings in esteemed institutions such as the National Library Australia, State Library Victoria, and Monash Gallery of Art.

Presentation: Exploring the Photogravure Technique: A Shift from Traditional to Contemporary Methods
Phil is an Imaging Specialist/Field Application Engineer for Vision Research, manufacturer of Phantom High-Speed cameras; responsible for the India and Asia/Pacific Regions. His primary roles involve developing high-speed solutions for advanced applications, system installations and training, testing experimental imaging techniques and providing on-site and remote application support to users. His 13-year tenure has seen him involved with a wide variety of challenges from hypersonic testing and space launch system development through to research and manufacture of a subsonic wind tunnel to analysis of pollen dynamics in UV wavelengths.
Phil holds a Science degree in Scientific Photography (2009) and an Arts degree with Honours in Media and Communication (2010) from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. He has special interest in applications of photographic techniques specific to flow visualisation, from microfluidics through to analogue and digital schlieren techniques.
In recent years, Phil has developed multiple Phantom Academy courses in General High-Speed Lighting, Imaging Transparent Flows and Imaging Projectiles in Flight and Impacts, presenting hands-on courses in Japan, Indonesia, China, Singapore, Australia and the United Kingdom, authoring comprehensive booklets for each course.
Phil strives to maintain a balance between personal research through photographic practise and delivering that knowledge to others equally passionate about improving their imaging competency.

Presentation: Emerging High-Speed Technology & Techniques in the Biomedical Space
David Larraguibel is a Forensic Photography Specialist with over a decade of experience in death investigation, during which time he developed a modernized photographic methodology and imaging infrastructure tailored for high-volume death investigations in metropolitan areas. He is a specialist in the use of visible and non-visible light modalities to document trauma, pathophysiology, and forensic subjects critical to suspicious cases and unidentified remains. David has provided comprehensive training to medical professionals, crime scene, sexual assault and domestic violence investigators, as well as military and civilian police services at all levels of government.

Charles Hedgcock, RBP, FBCA – United States
Charles “Chip” Hedgcock has more than 30 years of experience photographing in medicine, the life sciences, and fine arts. He is equally at home photographing in the studio or in the field. Since 2009 Chip has been the lead photographer for a series of biological expeditions into remote regions of Northern Mexico. Chip is a Registered Biological Photographer, a Fellow of the BioCommunications Association, and a Louis Schmidt Laureate. His award-winning photographs have appeared in an eclectic mix of publications including; LensWork, Spin, Ranger Rick, BBC Wildlife, Outdoor Photographer, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nature, and the Journal of BioCommunications.

Presentation: The Art and Science of Documenting Diversity
Mark Maio divides his time between personal fine art documentary photography and imaging in the field of ophthalmology. He has an Associate and Applied Science degree in technical photography, a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Photography, a Master of Arts in Humanities and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography and Communication Design. He has held teaching positions at Emory University, the State University of New York at Buffalo as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and as an Adjunct Professor of Photography at Rochester Institute of Technology.
His fine art photography has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States in addition to being included in public and private collections. In 2007 a (12) print portfolio of his “Against the Grain” work was purchased by the George Eastman Museum for their permanent collection. His photography is represented by Lumiere Gallery in Atlanta, GA. Mark has a second home on the Isle of Skye, Scotland and teaches workshops there. Presentation: Photographic Life Lessons
Victor began his career in 1986 as a medical photographer at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals using analog cameras. Fifteen years later the digital transformation began and his administrators asked him to take the lead on teaching Macromedia Dreamweaver and Fireworks to faculty students and staff. This began his entry into the field of education. To accommodate this steep learning curve into new technology, Victor enrolled in the Instructional Technology Master’s program at Virginia Tech and worked toward integrating his current duties with post graduate learning in the field of education. With a conglomerate of skills and abilities under his belt, Victor began a concurrent career as an adjunct professor of the Scientific Imaging program at Cuyahoga Community College in Parma, Ohio. This was a segue for the next step of imaging in medical education.

Presentation: Augmented Reality for Teaching Anatomy to Medical Students
Dr. Maja Divjak is the inaugural Biomedical Animator at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where she is creating animations about cellular and molecular mechanisms leading to cancer. After completing her PhD in molecular Biology, Maja spent quite some years in in scientific sales, but was keen to bring together her love of art and science in some form. A chance meeting with world-renowned Biomedical Animator Dr. Drew Berry at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute opened the doors to the wonderful world of science animation. Maja then pursued the dream of becoming a Biomedical Animator, studying Multimedia then 3D animation at the Australian Film Television and Radio School. She was then offered a coveted animation fellowship with Dr. Drew Berry and has been animating professionally since 2013. Her main expertise is animation of the invisible molecular world inside and on the surface of our cells. In addition to their role in education, Maja looks for ways her animations can achieve a wider audience in a more aesthetic, artistic form.

Gale is an Adjunct Professor at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia and currently serves as the Vice President of the BioCommunications Association.
Gale is active in forensic consulting, research and conducts workshops for various government departments. He retired in 2013 as the Deputy Dean of Teaching and Learning in the School of Science. From 1988 to 2008 he was the Program Leader of Scientific Photography and from 2008 to 2011, was the Program Leader of the Applied Science Multi-major program.

James Hayden, RBP, FBCA – United States
James Hayden, RBP, FBCA has been the Managing Director of the Wistar Institute Imaging Shared Resource for 22 years and currently serves as the President of the BioCommunications Association.
He is a Registered Biological Photographer whose primary area of expertise is in various forms of photomicrography: confocal, (live and fixed cell), 2-photon microscopy (including intra-vital imaging and 2nd Harmonic Generation), widefield, and whole-slide imaging. He also offers training and services in a wide range of other imaging modalities, including close-up and photomacrography, laboratory imaging, pre-clinical small animal imaging (fluorescence, bioluminescence, microCT, ultrasound and radiotherapy), and even portraiture and group photography. His work has appeared on the covers of many scientific publications (Nature, Science, PNAS, Developmental Biology, etc), as well as in the Nikon International Small World competition and the BCA BioImages competition. James has published book chapters on confocal microscopy and ethics, as well as co-authored scientific papers relating to cancer research and vaccine development. He has also lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally, often relating to his work with the ethics of digital manipulation in scientific images. When he's not in the lab, he can be found in the field chasing after the perfect bird photograph.
